The Mid Murray region is emerging as a key contributor to South Australia’s renewable energy future, with major wind, solar and battery storage projects operating or planned across the region. Developments such as the Palmer Wind Farm, Mannum Energy Park, and several large‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems near Mannum, Tungkillo and Harrogate are helping to deliver clean, reliable power to tens of thousands of homes. Together, these projects support emissions reduction, strengthen the electricity network, and bring long‑term investment and benefits to local communities.
Potentia Energy is leading the development of a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) designed to enhance the reliability and integration of variable renewable energy sources within South Australia’s electricity network.
Subject to obtaining the necessary approvals, construction of the proposed Harrogate BESS project would be expected to commence at the end of 2027, with operations due to begin at the end of 2029. The estimated investment value of the proposed project would be approximately $390 million.
Subject to obtaining the necessary approvals, the proposed project would comprise of shipping containers which are fitted with the battery units and control equipment associated with inverters and power transformers. The layout would be arranged in a grid pattern with enough space to allow access around each unit. A substation will be constructed within the project area to allow the project to connect to the 275kV Tungkillo – Mt Barker transmission line owned by ElectraNet.

Epic Energy owns and operates the Mannum Energy Park, a renewable energy hub near Mannum comprising two solar farms and a battery energy storage system. The project supports renewable energy generation and storage in the region. Epic Energy has also supported the local community through initiatives including its contribution to the lighting upgrade at the Mannum Oval Complex and Showground.

The Palmer Wind Farm will reduce Australia’s carbon footprint by generating up to 288MW of clean energy. That’s enough to power up to 142,000 South Australian homes. The project will also bring investment and benefits for the surrounding community.
The Palmer Wind Farm will be built between Palmer and Tungkillo, approximately 70 kilometres east of Adelaide. The project is on the lands of the Peramangk People.
The Project is now getting ready for construction in 2026.

OX2 is progressing the development of the approved Riverland Battery and Solar Farm, featuring a 300 MW* Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 330MW (AC) solar farm and across approximately 600ha for solar and 15ha for BESS.
The site is located approximately 2km north of Cadell, 10km north-east of Morgan, and 150km north-east of Adelaide, on private land.
The Project will connect to South Australia’s electricity network via a switching station linked to the 330kV PEC transmission line. A new overhead line (approximately 500m in length) will be required to connect the Project to the existing network.
The Project will be built in stages with the Battery due to begin construction in 2027 and operations are expected to begin by 2029. The Solar Farm is expected to begin construction in 2029 and operations in 2031.
The 15 ha Battery is rated at 300 MW* with a storage capacity of 1200MWh*, enabling up to 4 hours of dispatchable electricity. This will enable the Project to store energy for dispatch into the grid during periods of peak demand which contributes to increased grid stability and security.

The Summerfield Battery will support South Australia’s clean energy ambitions by storing more affordable renewable energy when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, and releasing it into the grid when it is needed most.
The project will also allow South Australia to export more renewable energy to Victoria and New South Wales via the planned interconnector.
Capacity - Summerfield is a four-hour 240 megawatt / 960 megawatt hour battery energy storage system (BESS).
Location - Near Mannum in South Australia, approximately 20km from the Tungkillo switching station.
Size - 222 battery containers over one hectare of land.
Benefits - Powering 70,000 or nearly 10% of South Australian homes every day.

The Tungkillo BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is propsed to be located approximately 40 km east of Adelaide and 8.5 km east of Mount Torrens, on Peramangk Country within the Mid Murray Council local government area (LGA).
- Location: Electronet Road, Tungkillo ( approximately 6 km south of Tungkillo township)
- Capacity: Up to 270 MW supplying up to 1,080 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage capacity
- Area: Around 20 hectares
- Connection to: The adjacent ElectraNet Tungkillo substation via a new 275 kV overhead cable
- Transmission line: Approximately 700 metres of transmission line will be required
- Project status: Iberdrola Australia acquired the project at the end of 2025. The project was approved in December 2024 and construction is expected to commence in mid-late 2026.
