Public Notification of Development Applications
Reforms to South Australia’s planning system have impacted how the public is notified about new development.
Performance assessed development is subject to public notification, but developments envisaged in a Zone may be excluded from public notification, as they are reasonably expected.
Performance assessed development means the proposal is assessed on its merits by Council’s Assessment Manager or if public notification applies, the Council Assessment Panel.
The general public is notified through the placement of a sign on the proposed site during the notification period, which is 15 business days; properties in the Rural Zone are exempt from placing signage.
The sign must be at least A3 in size and displayed on or within a reasonable distance of the public road frontage. For properties with multiple frontages, a sign may be required for each frontage.
Neighbours within 60 metres of the proposed development are also notified in writing by letter.
Any person who makes a representation about the development may request to be heard by the Council Assessment Panel, but once a decision is made, no appeal rights apply.
