All Steamed Up - A Fantastic Success

Mannum was certainly all steamed up on the Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November with the celebration of boats, blacksmiths, engines and steam.>

The 2018 All Steamed UP event attracted 9000 visitors over the two days with heritage paddle steamers and private paddle, wooden and classic boats lining the picturesque Mary Ann Reserve.  May heritage vessel volunteers made the long journeys to Mannum including he PS Oscar W from Goolwa and the PS Industry making the trip down from Renmark. Mannum’s PS Marion and PW Mayflower joined the celebrations along with the largest congregation of blacksmiths in South Australia including 37 volunteers from the South Australian Artist Blacksmith Association and visiting international blacksmith John McLellan from California.

Mayor Dave Burgess officially launched the replica Shearer Steam Carriage project on the Sunday and highlighted the amazing efforts of Doug Baker who has lead the replica project over the past two years.

“We are extremely fortunate in our Council region to have so many wonderful volunteers as without them we would not have seen such a magnificent event this weekend”.

“The inventive genius and commitment of Doug Baker, Bruce Weir-Smith here today and the many volunteers involved in the replica carriage project to bring the project to life today is truly outstanding.”

“We certainly look forward to the day the car is operational and we see Mannum’s engineering heritage operate down the Main Street of Mannum as David Shearer did 120 years ago.”

“I would certainly like to thank the many volunteers involved in the All Steamed Up event and the Building Betters Regions fund for their support.”

Engine displays of all shapes and sizes lined Arnold Park next to the ferry and the Museum opened its doors as part of the vent with outdoor drag saw demonstrations, the iconic Key Beam Engine steaming in the Randell Steam Shed and the All Steamed UP interactive display was moving fasting than the many boats on the water on the day!

Steam traction engines moved around Mary Ann Reserve and we even saw a Steam Truck make its way down Mannum’s main street to the delight of many visitors.

There were vintage and classic car displays, Mannum rowers challenging paddle boats, high speedboat displays, steam trains, all was need was aeroplanes and they would have had it all.

Mannum was certainly the Echuca of South Australia on the All Steamed Up weekend celebrating Mannum as the birthplace of the paddle steamer the PS Mary Ann in 1853 and Australia’s first steam carriage with a differential by David Shearer in 1897.

Mannum and the Murray River was certainly showcased with a story in the Sunday Mail and Brenton Ragless and his family visited the event and sent for a cruise on the PS Marion.  Brenton loves steam engines and had a chat with our steam volunteers including Ian ‘Johno’ Johnson in the Randell Steam Shed.

A big thank you to our many volunteers involved in this event and we look forward to the 2020 event!

Remarkable Women Touring Across Australia

Mannum’s Women of the River Country exhibition has been travelling across the Murray Darling Basin for the past 3 years and was launched at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery on 4th May 2018.

It was wonderful to see the Great Grandson of Captain William Randell at the launch, Toby Forwood and his wife Mimi (pictured). Captain William Randell built the first paddle steamer on the Murray River at Mannum in 1853, the PS Mary Ann.  Mary Ann Reserve at Mannum was named after the PS Mary Ann and the vessel was named after William’s mother Mary Ann Randell who is also profiled in the exhibition.

The Women of the River Exhibition will be on show at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery until the 10th June 2018 and will then make its way to the Australian Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, Sydney from the 20th June to the 20th September 2018 which is an amazing coup for the volunteers and staff of the Mannum Dock Museum who produced the exhibition.

A Cruising Jazz Christmas in July

Celebrating Christmas mid-year is now a culinary tradition we can enjoy on board the Paddle Steamer Marion as she cruises the magnificent Murray from Mannum  to Bowhill in July.

Whilst cruising with Jazz as the paddle wheel turns and the steam whistle roars, a sumptuous traditional Christmas fare cooked on board will be served culminating in a homemade pudding just like Grandma makes.

Two luncheon cruises are scheduled with the first departing Saturday 14th July at 11.30 a.m. from Mannum where you will listen to the melodic sounds of All 4 Jazz, a traditional jazz quartet on the top deck followed by a superb buffet luncheon presented by Chef Derek on the original wood oven creating the tastes like Grandma use to make.

You will arrive in the picturesque township of Bowhill around 3pm where a bus will await to return you back to your departure port in Mannum.

For bookings and further information contact the Mannum Visitor Information Centre on 85691303 or www.psmarion.com

Media Release   Juxtapose Exhibition profiles works of award winning junk artist at Mannum

The Arnold Gallery at the Mannum Dock Museum is alive with vibrant colour and contrasting effect by local award winning junk artist Steve Oatway.

“Juxtapose” brings works close together for contrasting effect with a touch of retrospect.

Steve Oatway believes his exhibition is a reflection of a quote by guitarist Pat Metheny, ‘I’m always trying to find ‘connections’ between things. That art is the juxtaposition of a lot of things that seem unrelated but add up to something recognisable”.

A breathtaking collection of sculpture, vibrant colour and innovation is on show until the end of June with Free Entry at the Arnold Gallery, Mannum Dock Museum, 6 Randell Street Mannum, Open 7 days. www.psmarion.com
